First-Time Umrah Checklist: Everything You Need Before You Go
Preparing for your first Umrah is exciting, but it's easy to overlook something important when there's so much to organize. This first-time Umrah checklist walks you through everything you need to sort before you go — from documents and vaccinations to what to pack and how to handle money — so you arrive prepared and can focus on your worship rather than last-minute worries. Use it as a step-by-step list you can work through in the weeks before departure.
Travelling from the United States? Pair this checklist with our complete guide to planning Umrah from the USA, which covers the visa, flights, hotels, and budgeting end to end.
Before anything else: give yourself enough time
The single most common mistake first-time pilgrims make is leaving things to the last minute — especially the visa and vaccinations, which can have processing times and validity windows. Start working through this checklist well ahead of your travel date rather than in the final week. This will allow you to have all of the logistics prepared so you can begin preparing to enter the state of Ihram, the spiritual and physical state of purity that is incredibly important for this trip.
For me personally, having all of the logistics done at least three weeks before your departure date is essential to ensure you can properly be ready for this journey.

1. Documents checklist
- Passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.
- Umrah visa or eligible tourist eVisa secured through official channels — apply via Nusuk or the official Saudi eVisa portal.
- Printed and digital copies of your passport, visa, and bookings (keep copies separate from the originals).
- Flight confirmations (outbound and return).
- Hotel booking confirmation.
- Vaccination certificate(s) — keep them handy in case you are questioned on arrival.
- Travel insurance documents, if you've arranged cover.
This list may seem quite detailed, but it is always better to be safe than sorry for a trip with many moving parts, like Umrah. You do not want to be caught in a situation where you do not have access to the right documentation when needed.
2. Health and vaccinations checklist
- Meningococcal (ACWY) vaccination, which has historically been required for pilgrims — confirm the current rule and carry proof.
- Any other required or recommended vaccinations for your circumstances.
- A small personal medication supply (plus a copy of prescriptions), and everyday items like pain relief, rehydration salts, and plasters.
- If you have a chronic condition, a plan for medication and care during the trip.
For the Umrah itself, make sure you carry water with you — temperatures around the Kaaba can reach upwards of 110°F (45°C), and staying hydrated through long days of walking and worship matters more than most first-timers expect.
3. Ihram and clothing checklist
- Ihram garments — for men, the two white unstitched cloths; bring a spare set. For women, note the modest-dress requirements rather than Ihram garments.
- Comfortable footwear suitable for a lot of walking — this matters more than people expect. For men, the ankle has to be exposed, so comfortable walking sandals are suggested (see IslamQA on footwear for Hajj and Umrah for more detail).
- Modest, weather-appropriate clothing for time outside Ihram — Saudi weather can be very hot.
- A small bag for shoes (useful around the Haram).
- Unscented toiletries for use while in Ihram, as scented products are avoided in the state of Ihram.
Take this portion of the trip seriously. Being comfortable is essential for a successful Umrah so you can focus on the spiritual aspect of the journey.
4. Money and essentials checklist
- A plan for currency — some local currency plus a card that works internationally.
- A sense of your daily budget for food and incidental expenses (these add up over a trip).
- Phone and charger, and a plan for connectivity (local SIM or roaming).
- A portable power bank for long days out.
- A refillable water bottle.
5. Knowledge and preparation checklist
- Learn the rites of Umrah thoroughly from knowledgeable, qualified sources before you travel — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i, and the trimming or shaving of hair. Don't rely on figuring it out when you arrive.
- Memorize or save key supplications you'd like to make.
- Understand the layout of the Haram and your hotel's route to it.
- Plan your ground transport from Jeddah to Makkah in advance — PlanUmrah lays out your transfer options alongside the rest of your trip.
6. Pre-departure final check (the week before)
- All documents gathered in one folder (physical + digital).
- Phone loaded with confirmations, maps, and any apps you need.
- Vaccination proof packed.
- Hotel and transport confirmed.
- Someone at home has a copy of your itinerary.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most important thing to prepare first for Umrah?
Your documents — passport and visa — and your vaccinations, because these have the longest lead times and can't be rushed at the last minute.
Do I need to be physically fit for Umrah?
Umrah involves a significant amount of walking — Tawaf, Sa'i, and getting to and from the Haram — so comfortable footwear and a reasonable level of mobility help. Pilgrims with mobility needs should plan accommodation close to the Haram and look into available assistance.
What should men pack for Ihram?
At minimum the two white unstitched garments, plus a spare set, and unscented toiletries for use while in Ihram. Confirm the specific requirements with a qualified source before you travel.
How much money should I budget for daily expenses?
Beyond your flights, hotel, and visa, budget for daily food and incidentals, which add up across the trip. PlanUmrah can help you estimate this for your specific trip.
